BS/MD Misconceptions: Every Program Looks for the Same Type of Applicant

Understanding Different BS/MD Program Categories

Read Time: 3.5 minutes

Good morning parents and future doctors,

Over the years in BS/MD admissions, we have met many applicants and families that approach the process with the harmful misconception that all programs are seeking the same type of applicant. Unfortunately, this misunderstanding can quickly derail a student’s chances for acceptance when a program rejects the student for lack of “program fit.” Each of the approximately 50 BS/MD programs across the country fall under three major categories as defined by our expert coaches, each valuing different qualities and experiences. Understanding these distinctions is critical to adapting your high school experiences and application strategy effectively.

The Three Categories of BS/MD Programs

BS/MD programs can be broadly classified into:

  1. Research and Stats Heavy Programs
  2. Service and Primary Care Heavy Programs
  3. Advocacy Heavy Programs

By recognizing which programs align with your strengths and experiences, you can significantly improve your chances of acceptance by adapting your application accordingly. This newsletter focuses on the first category — the Research and Stats Heavy Programs — and offers key insights on how to become a competitive applicant for these programs.

What Are Research and Stats Heavy BS/MD Programs?

These are among the most competitive BS/MD programs, seeking students who not only excel academically but also demonstrate a significant commitment to scientific research with tangible achievements. They typically expect:

  • Exceptional Test Scores: SAT scores of 1550+ or ACT scores of 35+. While all BS/MD programs expect excellent scores, programs in this category have notoriously higher average test scores.
  • Top Academic Standing: Ranking in the top 1% of your high school class with a near-perfect GPA. Most of these programs take fewer than 10 students each year, so it is easy to be excluded if you’re not at the top of your class.
  • Significant Research Experiences: Original scientific research leading to publications, presentations, and awards at national or international levels. When we look at 2025 BS/MD admissions and beyond, admits to these programs often have three or more publications when applying from high school – or comparable international level awards.
  • Prestigious Research Program Participation: Acceptance and involvement at highly competitive summer research programs can improve your changes, as these opportunities validate your qualifications with their sub-5% acceptance rates. Read more about summer research programs here.

Examples of research-intensive programs include the University of Pittsburgh’s Guaranteed Admissions Program (GAP), Penn State’s Premedical-Medical (PMM) Program, and Case Western Reserve University’s Pre-Professional Scholars Program (PPSP), among others.

Key Steps to Stand Out

While the full strategy involves detailed planning and a personalized roadmap, here are some key steps to set you on the right path:

1. Aim for Perfect or Near-Perfect Test Scores

  • Action: Start preparing early for standardized tests. You want to schedule your first SAT and ACT by the summer following your sophomore year – preferably earlier. Utilize review books, prep courses, or tutors as needed to achieve top scores.
  • Why: High test scores are a baseline expectation for these programs, this is simply a non-negotiable part of your application.

2. Maintain Top Academic Standing

  • Action: Excel in rigorous courses, especially in STEM subjects. Take as many AP or IB courses as possible and ensure you score well in each exam.
  • Why: Being in the top percentile showcases your academic dedication. When all other applicants to these programs have excellent academic records, you risk exclusion if you’re not at the same level.

3. Conduct Original Scientific Research Early

  • Action: Seek research opportunities from freshman or sophomore year, or earlier. You can start with a local university laboratory, apply to prestigious summer research programs, or conduct independent scientific research. It is essential to connect with mentors and develop original projects – many applicants have at least three separate research experiences.
  • Why: Demonstrable research productivity sets you apart and proves your commitment to advancing science and medicine, but you cannot produce publication-worthy research without putting in the time over multiple years.

You should consider applying to prestigious research-focused summer programs like the Research Science Institute (RSI), Simons Summer Research Program, or NIH Summer Internship Program. Our coaching team is here to provide end-to-end support for your summer research program applications.

4. Achieve Recognition Through Awards and Competitions

  • Action: Participate in state and international science fairs and competitions like ISEF, JSHS, and Regeneron STS. Submit your research to journals at the high school and professional level at every opportunity. Your mentors can provide support in connecting you with opportunities to present your research at conferences and accumulate awards.
  • Why: National and international accolades validate the significance of your research. Logging hours in the lab is not enough anymore for BS/MD admissions at these programs – you need to proactively look for places to submit your research every year.
